Man, 37, allegedly throws porridge & alcohol at pregnant woman who asked him not to smoke at Geylang eatery The man was issued a stern warning by the police. When a pregnant woman noticed a man was smoking at her neighbouring table at a frog porridge eatery in Geylang on Jan. 30 night, she asked the man not to smoke in a public space. However, instead of complying, the man, 37, allegedly walked up to her and purposely smoked next to her, reported Shin Min Daily News (Shin Min). He also apparently asked where she was from, to which the woman did not dare or wish to respond, as her husband was away ordering food. The lack of response apparently led the man to curse at the woman, and he returned to his seat before throwing the porridge and alcohol on his table at her. Eventually, the woman and her husband alerted the police, accusing the man of touching her inappropriately. Police officers arrived and arrested the man at the scene. Woman's account of what happened According to Shin Min, the woman offered her account of what happened in a post on Chinese social media Xiaohongshu. In the post, she claimed that she decided to ask the man not to smoke because the smell of smoke made her "feel unwell". She added that at the time, she did not want to mention that she was pregnant because she was "still in the early stages of her pregnancy" and "her baby bump was not visible yet". Although she made the request politely, she said the man reacted emotionally and even poured porridge and alcohol onto her dress. Later on, the man's friends apparently pulled him away. While the woman was not burnt by the porridge, she said that the incident had "greatly affected her physically and mentally", causing her to feel unwell even a week later. "I have also cleaned my dress, but I hate wearing it," she wrote in the post. Eatery owner advised woman to alert police The frog porridge eatery owner told Shin Min that on the day of the incident, the woman complained to her about being groped. As the owner did not witness the entire incident, she advised the woman to alert the police. "Police officers arrived shortly afterwards, and we showed them the CCTV footage," recounted the owner. According to the owner, as far as she knew, the dispute took place after "the man bumped into the woman while passing by her". The owner emphasised that her eatery, which had been in operation for six years, offers a "safe environment" and that drunken disturbances "had never occurred" on the premises. Woman allegedly accused eatery of clearing her food before she finished eating However, the incident did not come to a close after police arrived, reported Shin Min. According to the owner, after the woman and her husband left the eatery for around three hours, they returned and accused the eatery of clearing their table before they had finished eating. "We had a lot of customers during Chinese New Year, so we needed to clear tables on time to get on with our business. Additionally, she didn't inform us that she would be coming back to finish her meal," said the owner. Nevertheless, the owner shared that she eventually agreed to refund the woman S$12. Man issued stern warning: Police In response to Mothership's queries, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that they were alerted to the dispute at around 9:10pm on Jan. 30. The police said: "Upon completion of investigations and after careful consideration of the facts, the police, in consultation with the Attorney-General's Chambers, administered a stern warning to the man for using criminal force under Section 352 of the Penal Code 1871 and intentionally causing harassment under Section 3(1)(a) of the Protection from Harassment Act 2014."
