Ex-banquet server steals S$48,939 of ang paos from S'pore wedding reception, gambles away S$12,200 in 5 hours, gets jail He was familiar with the layout of the ballroom and knew where the ang paos would be placed. A former part-time banquet server snuck into a ballroom at the JW Marriott during a wedding reception on Apr. 5 and fled with two ang pao boxes containing over S$48,000. Lee Yi Wei, 36, used some of the money to buy new clothes, which he changed into before going to a Singapore Pools outlet and gambling away another S$12,200 in the span of five hours. Lee was unemployed at the time and a habitual gambler. He was arrested on Apr. 7. He was sentenced to one year's jail on Jun. 24 and ordered to pay about S$46,000 to the victim by Jul. 31, reported. Stole unattended ang pao boxes during wedding lunch According to court documents seen by Mothership, Lee was a former part-time banquet server who had worked at the Grand Ballroom at the JW Marriott, and was familiar with its layout. He also knew that during wedding receptions, the ang paos (red packets containing cash) would be placed on the registration table at the foyer. On Apr. 5, Lee arrived at the ballroom and checked that there was an available escape route via the ballroom's side door. At 12:49pm, CCTV footage showed that when the registration table was momentarily unattended, Lee walked over and took a white box and a blue box, containing ang paos with cash amounting to S$48,939. He then fled through the side door. When the wedding organiser was informed that the boxes were missing, he checked CCTV footage and called the police at about 1:04pm to report the theft. The organiser said that the thief, who was clad in black including a black cap and mask, appeared to have run in the direction of Beach Road. Stashed cash in locker & bought new clothing Investigations showed that Lee had walked to a back alley along Purvis Street and transferred the contents of the white box into the blue box. At about 1:02pm, he was seen on CCTV storing the blue box in a locker at level 7 of the National Library. Lee then went to Bugis Junction, used S$348 of the stolen cash to buy new white clothing, and changed into it. He retrieved the remaining ang paos from the locker at 1:44pm, and discarded the blue box. That afternoon, Lee spent another S$60 on clothing at Raffles City and also deposited S$36,331 of the stolen cash into his DBS account. These deposits were converted into online gambling credits and transferred to Lee's account with an unlicensed gambling service provider. He used the converted credits to place 195 bets over the next two days. Gambled away S$12,200 in five hours Lee also visited a Singapore Pools outlet at Middle Road on the night of Apr. 5 to gamble. From 11:13pm on Apr. 5 to 3:36am on Apr. 6, he gambled a total of S$12,200 from the stolen cash there. On Apr. 7, Lee was arrested and cash of S$3,000 was seized from him. Lee pleaded guilty to one count of theft and one count of gambling with an unlicensed gambling service provider, according to CNA. The judge sentenced Lee to one year's jail and ordered him to pay about S$46,000 to the victim, the 29-year-old groom at the wedding. If Lee is unable to pay by Jul. 31, he must serve another 100 days in prison. Top image from Lianhe Zaobao/Canva
